Does the laptop have a cd drive? If not then you will need to prepare a usb boot up flash drive or sd card.It is quite compicated if you are a beginner and remember that you will need a genuine key to be able to get the latest flash and updates from microsoft...If the laptop HAS a cd drive then it is quite straight forward. Here goes if there is a cd:
Start the pc and go to BIOS, MAKE 1ST BOOT FROM CD
then save the configuration and put xp o/s cd in the pc and reboot pc..after that it is self explanatory...Let me know if that helps..
Next thing you have to bear in mind is that a genuine key for windows cost £98 (roughly) that is why a pc shop will charge you a fortune..There are some ways of going through that if you google a bit but remember that windows has recently updated their WGA and its getting harder to bypass it but not impossible...!!!I will suggest ubuntu 9.04 ,it's free and super quick..try it..
